I wrote this earlier in 2013 to complete my english class assignment. This was written before PVJ and MOI has it own 4DX Auditorium.
Introduction
Movie is one of the most popular entertainment nowadays. Watching
movie is also my hobby beside listening music. Some reason of why people like
to watch movies is that movies combine some element such as audio, moving
picture, good looking actor or actress, interesting story and good soundtrack.
In my opinion, Hollywood Blockbuster movies perfectly combine those element.
I’m saying so because blockbuster movies got a great revenue in every single
film they produce and their soundtrack often fill the international music
chart.
At first, movie technology is not as sophisticated as we see now.
Movies at its early era is only black and white moving pictures and sometimes
accompanied by sound (actually the sound is only background music or
commentary, no dialogue at all). This early movies is called silent movies because
it has no dialogues. One succes example of movies from this silent era is
Charlie Chaplin’s movies. Charlie Chaplin is a legendary slapstick comedian
that came from this era of film. He didn’t use any dialogue at all to make
people laugh. The latest silent black and white films produced was The Artist
back in 2011 that won 5 Acamdemy Awards Category. ()
Movie technology developed better over time. Movies then has a
dialogue after the silent movie era although it is still black and white in
color. One of the notable example of black and white films that include
dialogue is To Kill A Mockingbird, a
film based on a novel with the same title. Another excellent black and white
film is Schindler’s List, one of the
many Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece.
After the black and white era, the full color movies emerge. In
this era, movies became more diverse and attract more audience. Movie creator
can explore and break the limit to show their best capabilities of making
films.
The
3D technology the comes after. Actually 3D movies exist from 1915, but at that
time the technology is very expensive and only a few people mastered the 3D
technology. In the early 2000s, commercial 3D movies emerge. In 2009, James
Cameron’s Avatar shows the world a
very realistic 3D movies. At the same time, South Korean company CJ 4DPLEX
introduce new
movie technology that is called 4DX commercially. This technology
is the latest development in movie technology, along with IMAX.

4DX™ is a revolutionary cinematic technology that
stimulates the audiences’ 5 senses through customized effects to give the
audiences the best experience while watching a movie. 4DX technology makes people feel that they are inside the film. This
makes the film more intense and immersive. Film genre that suit best for this
format is action, animation or sci-fi because in this genre there are more
effect than other genre. 4DX emphasize movie efect rather than the story and
the soundtrack. This is a new thing for movie fans and many of them will love
movie much more than before.
Sotuh Korean CJ 4DPLEX was the one that develops the 4DX technology. This
company introduce the technology commercially in 2009 at Seoul, South Korea.
The first film commercially used the 4DX technology at that time is Journey to the Center of the Earth. The
film that is now playing that use 4DX is The
Hunger Games and Thor : The Dark
World. These films can demonstrate
the 4DX technology perfectly because it’s action movies that has many effects.
4DX technology feature many different enviromental effects to transform the
experience of watching a movie. These effect is made to make every audiences’ 5
senses feel the movies. Some effects in 4DX movies include strobe lights, bubbles, fog effect, wind effect, short bursts of sharp
air, vibration, fade mists and scent.
The following are some of the effects that the 4DX theaters offer:
- Strobe lights is the light effects that flashing during the movie. The auditorium light will blink on and off to emphasize the panic effect, or maybe the old broken house effect.
- Bubbles is the effect that makes bubble comes out from the screen and the audiences can also feel the bubbles. This effect makes happy scene, water scene etc.
- Fog effect makes the auditorium covered in fog to emphasize the effect of gloomy, dark scene.
- Wind effect makes the audience feel the gust of wind. This effect makes the breeze effect, breath effect etc.
- Short burst of sharp air as the name says, this effect burst sharp air to audience.
- Scent is the effect that will make the audience can smell interesting things in the movies from their nose.
There are 3 process to show 4DX in theater. First is Getting
movies from distibutor. The movies is stil in 2D or 3D format. Next, the
technician will adjust the appropriate effects for every single action in the
movies for the auditorium. And the last process is the showtime. People can
enjoy the movie at this process.
Although they have similar name, 4D and 4DX is different. The 4DX
movies is feature Hollywood Blockbuster Movies while 4D is only feature special
movies that is only produced for the 4D. Because 4DX feature Hollywood movies,
of course the duration follows the duration of the movies. The hollywood movies
also change regularly unlike the 4D theater.
The 4DX theater available in many countries and still expanding
the availability of the theater in other countries. In Indonesia, there are one
4DX auditorium that is located in the blitz megaplex Grand Indonesia, Jakarta. The
development of this technology in Indonesia is quite good. Blitz Megaplex is
planning to expand their 4DX theater to more city in Indonesia.
